Galia immigrated to Australia from the UK in 2013, having over 20 years of nursing, paediatric community and disability services history. Galia has a formal critical care nursing background, and after the birth of her deeply premature daughter, following the big fight for her survival and the big win, Galia changed adult nursing to paediatrics.
With the strong dedication to what she found as her “professional life calling”, she funded in- home services with additional big ambitions to establish centre based respite care and wellness facility for children with high and complex needs.
Some families across Australia heard the name Carmella’s House. This was Galia’s first attempt to establish the charity with the name dedicated to Carmella Evans, that Galia and her Team in the UK supported for number of years and that passed away due to a life debilitating condition. In order to raise much-needed funds for the charity, she found a big niche and being inspired by numerous vital charitable services available in the UK, she established Carmella’s House shop and kickstarted selling wearable assistive technology equipment for children. In 2017 Galia brought to Australia the first Carmella’s House-branded orthopaedic footwear for kids and helped co-design Medica Shoes - children’s orthopaedic shoes that were showcased at the Pedorthic Association Expo in Canberra.
The children's orthopaedic footwear became very popular Australia wide, however the charitable mission hasn’t been recognised by public and the Carmella’s story was lost among the innovative assistive technology. As the result, Well and Able was established to separate wearable technology from the main purpose of the Charity. Later on due to unforeseen changes in family circumstances, Galia couldn’t longer sustain her charitable mission.
However, the dream of establishing Charity and giving compassionate nature of Galia’s personality sparked back after meeting Patrick who shares similar values and vision.
Paper Cranes name for the charity was suggested by one of the student nurses working with Galia and we collectively started this all over again.
